The original & the best! Classic Dirt 16 August 4–6 2023

This article was originally published in Classic Dirt Magazine, Issue 93, 2023

VMX Magazine Classic Dirt 16, at this new venue, is shaping up to be the best time you’ll have on an old dirt bike – bar none.

The site is simply magnificent and has never been used before by dirt bikes. Natural terrain tracks at their best – lush, green grass and some elevation changes.

The site is at Grevillia, NSW, just twenty minutes north of Kyogle and is part of the beautiful Northern Rivers area. Indeed, the Richmond River trickles along at the bottom of the venue! At this event you really can really turn back time to those years when scrambles and motocross tracks really were just pegged out on a grassy hillside and just like it was done at the original Classic Dirt – Classic Dirt 2000! Except there’s many more tracks to choose from these days – Pre ‘95, twinshock, vinduro loops and trials.

There’s a brand new shower block with a brand new hot water system! Toilets will be the usual portables. That’s just for the blokes – ladies, just wait to see your fully-tiled and also brand new bathroom and shower facilities! We must give our thanks for these facilities and indeed a ton of improvements to this facility by the property owner, John Boyd.

He has been just incredible with the way he has spent so much time and money on making sure that the Three Pines MX Park will be a magnificent destination! As well as the bathroom facilities, wait until you see the bar! The camping areas will be very well-grassed and spacious. The township of Kyogle is only twenty minutes to the south, while Woodenbong is only fifteen minutes to the north. Brisbane and the Gold Coast are each only a bit over two hours away. Kyogle has a good range of accommodation plus a supermarket, fuel and a few pubs. Good on-site catering and coffee will be present, as always.

This year, we will have a new element that will be sure to bring some excitement and rewards. There will be a Legends Charity Auction which will happen late Saturday. Up for auction will be loads of clothing items signed by legends from around the world (jerseys, t-shirts, caps), plus some great memorabilia. All proceeds from the Auction and Raffle will go to the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation (www.pcsrf.org.au).

Plus, there’ll be all the same old elements of VMX Magazine Classic Dirt that you’ve come to know and love – trade stands, swapmeet sellers, Legends Laps and interviews, Show and Shine, live band on Saturday night and the trivia competition. Dates and location.

When: 4-6 August (Fri-Sun) 2023

Where: Three Pines MX Park – 129 Montgomerys Road, Sherwood (next to Grevillia), NSW 2474

What’s on when?

A full schedule will soon be on our website: www.vmxmagshop.com.au under News and Events CD16, but the abridged version is as follows:

  • Thursday: THE EVENT IS NOT OPEN ON THURSDAY, with gates open to the public at 7.
  • 30am on Friday. Security personnel will be on the gate 24 hours a day Thursday morning through to Sunday afternoon.
  • Friday: The event will be open all day Friday, with full catering all day. There will be no riding on the Friday however you can complete your rider sign-on for riding on Saturday and Sunday.
    • In the evening, the ‘Magoo’ bar will be open for refreshments in the great indoor and outdoor food/bar area where you can sit back and relax…just as our old mate Bruce would have done (the Magoo Bar is in honour of VMX legend Bruce McFarland).
  • Saturday: Ride your heart out! There’ll be riding sessions all day (remember, there is NO RACING at CD16) and there will be two motocross tracks, a vintage enduro loop (easy/hard options) and a trials section (we won’t be having a flat track for CD16 but we’re aiming to have a new flat track that will blow you away for CD17). All tracks are brand new, natural terrain tracks!
    • The trivia quiz will be held early Saturday evening with some fabulous prizes. Catering will of course be on hand Saturday evening, for all your food and drink requirements (beer will be available from the ‘Magoo’ Bar as well). After that it’s time to boogie along with a few familiar numbers from the ‘70s and ‘80s.
  • Sunday: More riding of course, with all tracks open all day. Those who want to camp overnight and leave Monday morning can do so.
  • Monday: The event officially closes at noon Monday and the site must be completely vacated by this time. There is NO riding on the Monday.

Legends at CD16

At every Classic Dirt there’s wall-to-wall Legends and this year will be no different. Headlining the legend line-up this year will be Jeff Leisk and we’ll interview Jeff over the weekend. Stephen Gall will also be there as well as a bunch of others and their stories will really keep you entertained.

Show and Shine

Every year the Show and Shine at Classic Dirt presented a wonderful array of top-class machinery. This year, we’re sure it will be bigger again and will be held during the Sunday lunch break. There will be some great prizes, with a prize for the winner of each category. Plus, the overall winning bike will be guaranteed a feature spot in a future issue of VMX Magazine!

Riding Info

As mentioned, there’ll be two motocross tracks. Both are natural terrain with no man-made features – not a one! The Pre ‘95 is about 2 km in length while the Twinshock track is about 1km.

There will be a marked vinduro loop (with Easy/Hard options) of about 5 km and this will be open primarily to bikes that are equipped with a headlight and tail light.

Trials bikes will be catered for as well, with an area set aside just for them – the Trials area will be for Trials bikes only.

We won’t be having a flat track for CD16 but we’re aiming to have a new flat track that will blow you away for CD17.

All of these tracks will be set out in the program that you receive on arrival, including entry and exit points.

Catering

The event will be fully catered on-site for breakfast lunch and dinner on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will also be the infamous ‘Magoo’ bar.

Accommodation

Camping will be available at the venue and camping is FREE, whether a rider or spectator. Basic toilet/shower (hot/cold) facilities will be on site. If you’d prefer to stay off-site then there is ample accommodation in the surrounding area – Bed and Breakfast, Motel, Hotel, Cabins, Caravan Parks – in Kyogle (twenty minutes away) or one of the other local towns.

Swapmeet

The swapmeet will run Friday to Sunday and there will be no better opportunity to access other vintage dirt bike enthusiasts than at CD16 – so start loading up the trailer with those parts that are sitting idle under your bench. Most people prefer to sell items from their camping spot and there will be no charge for private sellers. If you require a dedicated space in the Trade Stand area then a fee will apply and that space needs to be organised prior to the event. Contact: sou@vmxmag.com.au for pricing.

Riding & Entrance Fees

This year, we have again gone for the streamlined fees and made it easier for riders and spectators. Everyone coming through the gate still receives a free souvenir, full-colour program. Children under 16 are FREE.

As well, CAMPING IS FREE for everyone, rider or spectator!

  • Rider Fee is $165
  • Spectator fee is $20

Yep, that’s it, couldn’t be simpler. Two full days of riding, event entry and camping all for $165. Riders will still need to pay for a one-event Licence if they don’t have an existing Competition Licence. The one event Licence will be available for purchase when you enter. Payment via Ridernet can be by credit card (a card fee applies) or by EFT (no extra cost!) directly to VMX Magazine.

Rider Registration/Pre-Entry

As with previous events, Pre-entry is strongly encouraged to avoid queues and delays at the event. That said, entries will be taken at the event. All Pre-entries are to be lodged with Ridernet and an entry link and more information will be available soon.

Entries Now Open!

We will announce when entries are open on our Facebook page and on our website. Once entered, you will receive a receipt via email and that receipt must be shown at the gate upon entry to Classic Dirt.

Firstly, existing entries from previous dates are all still valid and no further costs will apply.

New entries are open now and can be done via Ridernet. Easy to follow directions for entry via Ridernet are on our website www.vmxmagshop.com.au under News then go to the News and Events heading.
