The release of this book in 2014 marks fifty years since the first Hodaka was produced and sold in 1964.

Made in Japan but designed and distributed by PABATCO in the USA, the pioneering trail bike was often advertised as being ‘designed by Americans, for Americans’.

Their first model, the Ace 90, was a groundbreaking concept and was the leading small bore trail bike for years to come. Started as a ‘one model, one color’ concept, the evolution of the brand nonetheless saw other models being introduced over time, particularly in the ’70s.

They were much more than just a trail bike though and much more than just a brand with a bunch of wacky model names like Super Rat, Wombat, Road Toad and Thunderdog.

With the assistance of people like legendary tuner Harry Taylor, the brand was successful in enduros, in desert racing, in scrambles and motocross, in flat track and TT, in Trials, and even in road racing.

Hodaka really was the little bike that could.

This hardcover book has taken almost fifteen years to come to completion. Written by VMX Magazine Editor, Ken Smith, the story could only now be told in its entirety thanks to the stories shared by many of the original PABATCO employees and the access that was given to their photo libraries.

All copies sold by VMX Magazine will be signed by the author!
